Fitflops sandals provide the answer to the growing time pressures which face today’s woman which prevent her from finding the time to get to the gym to keep her body in tip top shape. Fitflops first arrived on the market back in 2006 before the world knew that it was possible to get firm legs and bottoms without daily gym sessions.
Of course nowadays many trainer and footwear manufacturers are providing a lifestyle fitness solution to offer a toning program without the time commitment; however it was the Fitflop which started the trend and first brought the benefits of increased firming, toning and fat burning to a simple walking program or without changing a daily routine at all.
The key to the success of the sandals is due to the development of the Microwobbleboard, inspired by the wobble board which increases muscle activation and toning. Varying densities of EVA foam have been combined in the midsole of the sandal which provides increased benefits to walking and builds the gym into every step.
The Fitflop was turned into reality with the engineering expertise of Dr David Cook and Darren James at the London South Bank University. Their expertise in biomechanics turned the concept into a reality.
The Fitflop Microwobbleboard consists of a triple density EVA foam midsole which functions as a super shock absorber and a muscle activator. The heel section is the first to hit the ground and is the point which takes the weight of the body. In order to cushion the strike force the midsole is comprised of a high density EVA foam component to offer superb shock absorption reducing the strike force by up to 22% compared to standard shoes. The extra cushioning reduces stress in the joints easing the pressure placed on the ankle and the knees for a softer and gentler walking pattern akin to barefoot walking.
The heel section is also designed to promote a natural rolling motion to naturally take the foot into the second phase of the step. The weight is transferred to the midsection of the shoe which is responsible for increased activation of the muscles in the legs and bottom. The mid section consists of low density super soft EVA foam which causes an instability when walking to which the body responds by both increasing muscle activity to compensate, and increasing the time which muscles are switched on in order to maintain balance. The natural rolling motion started with the heel strike is carried forward into the final phase of the step and the push off from the toes.
The toe section of the midsole contains mid density foam to make for a firm push off to promote a faster walking speed, and in the process increase the cardiovascular component of walking helping you to get fitter, faster.

The theory is sound but in order to thoroughly test the benefits of the sandals it was necessary to quantify the toning increases. In order to accurately measure the increase in muscle activity Dr David Cook and Darren James conducted a series of Electromyograpical tests on the Fitflop Walkstar sandal with the help of the University of Salford and the facilities at the Centre for Human Performance at LSBU in London.
Electrodes were placed on the muscles of the legs which monitored the electrical activity in the muscles, and sent data which could be easily analysed by a computer. By measuring the muscle activity from wearing normal shoes and with the new Fitflops they were able to accurately demonstrate the toning benefits of Fitflops sandals.
The results clearly demonstrated a massive increase in muscle activity in the core muscle groups in the legs and bottom when wearing Fitflops. The level of activation level varied between each individual due to the walking gait, however the results clearly demonstrated that it was possible to increase muscle activation in the calves by up to 11%, the hamstrings by up to 16% and the muscles in the buttocks by up to 30%, with one subject registering a 53% increase in gluteal muscle activation.
However there is more to the Fitflop than toning alone, and by promoting a more natural walking pattern the shoes help to improve the posture of the body and reduce the stresses on the joints of the legs and ease the stress on the lower back.
Wearing FitFlop footwear can realign ground reaction force towards your core, helping alleviate back, pelvic and knee stress.*

Biomechanists Dr Philip Graham-Smith and Richard Jones at Salford University have identified that gait analysis techniques (motion analysis, forces, electromyography and in-shoe pressure analysis) can provide us with insight as to how the Microwobbleboard multi-density midsole alleviates a host of muscular-skeletal conditions. The subject above was fitted with small reflective markers and electrodes, photographed and filmed while walking to monitor movement. This information was used to create an animation of a skeleton walking in exactly the same way as the subject. These preliminary findings form part of a two-year UK government- funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership to research the biomechanical benefits of FitFlop Microwobbleboard technology.
Meanwhile, many wearers of FitFlops have also reported relief from plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, chronic back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis, RLS (restless leg syndrome), scoliosis and even degenerative disc disease.
FitFlop biomechanical efficiency and performance testing was carried out by Dr David Cook, Senior Lecturer in Biomechanics, and Darren James between December 2006 and March 2007 at Salford University, Manchester and the Centre for Human Performance, LSBU, London, on the original FitFlop Walkstar sandal.
