Six-day African trek to be launched

For those who fancy taking their Merrell hiking bootsfurther afield, a new six-day hike through the wilderness of the South African bush is to be set up.

The Eastern Cape Park Board will develop a guided trail through the Baviaanskloof area later this year, reports the Port Elizabeth Herald.

Wayne Erlank, the board's western regional manager, told the paper: "A number of sites offering fine quality San cave art have been found in the area and the potential exists for the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve to become a tourist destination of choice for wilderness and cultural heritage tourism."

Contained within the reserve are seven of the eight biomes that are found in South Africa and it is noted as an area of biodiversity, allowing trekkers the potential to spot many exotic species.

The region is a World Heritage Site and includes landscapes such as forests, grasslands and savannahs, meaning quality hiking boots such as Merrell's should be packed.

Baviaanskloof is also the site of several examples of San, or bushman, rock art.

San rock paintings frequently show the animals that pre-historic bushmen lived upon, with the eland being one of the most commonly drawn. Scene revealing tribal dances have also been found, according to the Bradshaw Foundation.ADNFCR-1002-ID-18499795-ADNFCR
