A 42-year-old man from Winchester is to take part in a gruelling desert marathon to raise money for a children's charity.
Alan Cummings, from Badger Farm, will take part in the 151-mile Marathon des Sables in a fundraising effort for Facing Africa, reports thisishampshire.net.
The marathon is a six-day race across the Sahara desert in Morocco, with runners carrying all supplies except their tent and water on their backs in temperatures reaching 120F.
Facing Africa helps children suffering from Noma (cancrum oris) - a gangrenous infection of the face that causes painful disfigurement and death.
Speaking to the site, Mr Cummings said: "I'm not an ultra-athlete. I think when I'm running it's the dedication that'll keep me going."
To prepare for the challenge, he has been completing 18-mile runs carrying a 12 kilogram rucksack several times a week.
Mr Cummings also said he decided to take part after hearing Jack Osbourne had only lasted one day in the race.
When questioned by the Daily Telegraph, Mr Osbourne said: "I couldn't put myself through that much pain".
