Centenarian to run marathon

A 101-year-old man is hoping to become the oldest competitive runner in the world by attempting the London Marathon next month.

Buster Martin, who is claimed to be Britain's oldest worker and is an ex-member of the rock band the Zimmers, completed the Roding Valley half marathon on Sunday in five hours 13 minutes, report BBC Online.

After crossing the finishing line, his first words were "Where's my beer?" before drinking a glass of ale and chatting to fans.

Mr Martin then managed to show up for work at Pimlico Plumbers the next morning, prompting manager director Charlie Mullins to remark: "I was amazed and delighted, he turned up on time and set to work polishing the vans. He's a revelation."

The centenarian athlete was also in the news last year when the BBC reported that he told then-Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell to ignore comments about his age.

Sir Menzies had previously said he drew inspiration from people like Mr Martin who work past the retirement age.
