Westminster Mile for Sport Relief

More than 50 MPs took a break from debating in the House of Commons and ran a mile for charity yesterday.

The politicians laced up their running shoes, although it is unclear if any wore Merrells, to run the Westminster Mile for Sport Relief, reports the Western Mail.

Sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe told the paper: "Sport has the power to change lives and it was great to see my fellow MPs joining me and really getting behind Sport Relief.

Conservative David Davies, MP for Monmouth, was first across the finish line, with Chris Bryant, Labour MP for Rhondda, coming second and Liberal Democrat Willie Rennie, Dunfermline and Fife West, bringing up third.

The race, which was started by Olympic gold winner Sir Stephen Redgrave, took place ahead of Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile on March 16th and was held in St James' Park, London.

In the first Westminster Mile in 2004, Labour MP Jim Murphy took first place in the race, which also saw then-prime minister Tony Blair taking part.
