Shoe collection to show effects of tobacco
A campaign has been launched in the US to collect 1,200 shoes to demonstrate the numbers of Americans who dies everyday from tobacco-related illnesses, reports the njtimes.com
Running shoes, golf shoes and shoes from the likes of Caterpillar, Mizuno, Ecco and Merrell are likely to be included in the haul of footwear made from fifteen schools in New Jersey.
The venture is being organised by the tobacco prevention programme, Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies (Rebel), as part of an annual number of events and activites based on increasing awareness of the harm smoking can cause.
Lauren Radano, Rebel youth coordinator, said the campaigners are hoping the display of shoes at a nearby shopping centre will act as a visual reminder of what smoking can do.
“Our teens hope that the shoes will remind people of the loss of human life caused by tobacco products,” she said.
She added that tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 people every year.
