New board sport in Lancashire

Some fitness fanatics are content to lace up their Merrell running shoes and head out for a jog, but a Lancashire couple are taking running to new limits.

Gary Mitchell and Lina Clarkson have taken up the sport of 'extreme ironing' – in which participants take an iron and board out on a run, do a spot of ironing and then return home.

Speaking to thisislancashire.co.uk, Mr Mitchell, 46, said: "We've only just started. We did a run up to Darwen Tower and it seems to have gone a bit crazy."

The couple now plan to extreme iron at beauty spots across East Lancashire, with Gary carrying the board and Lina packing the iron in her rucksack.

It is claimed that extreme ironing began in Leicester in 1997, with the first extreme ironing championship taking place in Germany in 2002, with two British teams taking gold and bronze medals in team events.
