Aerobic fitness reduces stroke risk

Having a moderate level of cardiovascular fitness can significantly reduce the chances of having a stroke, a study presented to the American Stroke Association suggests.

"Fitness has a protective effect regardless of the presence or absences of other stroke risk factors," says Steven Hooker PhD, the study's lead author.

The findings reveal that a low-to-medium level of aerobic fitness would be enough to lower the chance of stroke, which gives a good reason to go running in a new pair of Merrell running shoes.

Over 60,000 people were analysed in the study, and were followed for an average of eighteen years.

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in England and Wales, with an estimated 150,000 people suffering one each year in the UK, according to the Stroke Association.
