Merrell shoes battle the odour problem

Merrell is at the forefront of a new wave of running shoe and athletics equipment manufacturers attempting to tackle one of runners' big problems – smelly gear.

The synthetic fibres common in modern running shoes and other equipment have the advantage of being light and water-resistant, but they are prone to retaining odours and even incubating bacteria.

Derivatives from coconuts and crabs are amongst the unusual products that sportswear manufacturers are turning to so as to address the problem, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A substance made from coconut shells is being used by Merrell in some products, while odour-fighting linings and coatings made by Aegis are being applied to Merrell's new Siren range of women's running shoes.

Patagonia, in turn, is using chitosan – obtained from crab shells – in some of its athletic wear.

The latest technology in footwear can be found from Merrell, Patagonia and other brands here on the Fitness Footwear website.
