Hikers encouraged to wear suitable footwear

A voluntary emergency agency is calling for hill walkers and hikers to take greater care when embarking out during the winter months – by using the correct footwear.

The appeal comes after increasing numbers of ramblers are stretching the resources of Mountain Rescue England & Wales by embarking on trips without due preparation.

Suitbale footwear from Mizuno, Ecco or Merrell could all be used to remedy the problem which has caused some walkers to have to be rescued by the emergency services.

Speaking to the BBC, a volunteer with the Rossendale and Pendle team in Lancashire, Andy Simpson, said he remembers a climber who was found on the top of Snowdon in Wales wearing a pair of slippers.

"He must have been about 60 and he was wearing a jumper that looked like his mum had knitted, a pair of trousers and his slippers," he said.

"I guess he must have thought his slippers were the most comfortable thing he had. Luckily for him, he didn't come to any harm," concluded Mr Simpson.
