Attendees of this year's Vancouver Folk Festival will no longer be taking part in the event's famous opening day foot-race owing to health and safety concerns.
Since the festival begun, music fans have been taken part in a semi-official race to the stage when the gates of the venue are opened on the first day.
On account of the tendency for the crowd to wear sandals - and in a nod to the Indy 500 motor race - the event was dubbed the Birkenstock 500.
However, the open-toe challenge has now been given the boot on account of increasingly rowdy behaviour from racers.
Festival spokesperson Marnie Wilson told 680 News: "What started out as fun moved into a bit more pushing and shoving and people struggling to get to that position.
"That hasn't been in keeping with the festival spirit. They just don't want anybody to get hurt."
Fitness Footwear sells an extensive range of Birkenstock shoes including the Zerraport, Newport and Venice models.
