Climber proposes marriage from Everest

A climber has used a satellite phone to propose to his girlfriend from Mt Everest.

Anthony Williams of Barrow made the romantic gesture some 7,600 feet up the north face of world's highest peak and was instantly accepted by Adele Marks.

However, Mr Williams did not complete the climb owing to an injury he sustained en route.

He told the South West Evening Mail: "It’s great to be back. It was the experience of a lifetime. It makes you realise how much you love your family and home. When Adele said yes it was fantastic, it really picked me up.

"I promised my family I would not put myself at risk. I did not make it to the summit but I fulfilled a dream because I've been there. It was amazing pushing yourself to the limit. I'd love to do it again but I don’t think Adele will let me."

The couple plan to get married in 2009, and are also planning a trip to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa which they will embark on together.
