Sherpa breaks record for Mt Everest ascents

A veteran Sherpa guide has climbed Mount Everest for a seventeenth time – breaking his own record for ascents of the world's highest mountain.

Apa Sherpa, 47, reached the summit of the 8,850 ft mountain along with six climbing companions, all of whom form the Super Sherpa team which is currently making a film about their people's world-renowned aptitude for rock climbing.

Having first conquered the mountain in 1989, the 17th ascent for Apa means he has now scaled the peak four more times than his nearest competitor Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, 39, who was also part of the Apa's team.

It is thought that around 2,000 people have climbed Everest from the Tibetan and Nepali faces since 1953.

As well as being one the market-leading sites for Merrellhiking boots, Fitness Footwear also sells a range of climbing footwear including high-performance Merrell shoes.
