Patagonia seen as green 'pioneers'

Environmentally-friendly clothes and footwear manufacturer, Patagonia, has been described as a 'pioneer' of the current vogue for eco-fashions by a newspaper.

The comments came in an article on 'green' fashions where the company was heralded as one of the first to pioneer a move towards environmentally-conscious clothing.

Having been established in 1993 the company then switched to organic cotton in 1996 after it had become the first manufacturer to use recycled plastic bottles to produce fleeces with.

Patagonia initially struggled as it had to lower its prices and reduce the number of products it made to deal with the higher prices and scarcity of organic cotton, said Coley Glasgow, a spokeswoman for the company.

Ms Glasgow told San Jose Mercury News: "When we made the switch, we were counting on our customers to make the same choices we had made - to pay more for organics. And they did."

The company's current environmental campaign is focused on protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the north-east corner of Alaska.

If you are looking to wear 'greener' clothes or just need some walking boots then Patagonia footwear products are available here from Fitness Footwear.
