Walk-a-thon boosts kidney fund

With walkers recovering and dusting off their boots, it has emerged that last month's US-wide 2nd Kidney Awareness Time Walk-a-thon raised over $400,000 (£200,000) for kidney-health awareness programs.

The walk took place in 54 cities across 28 US states, managing to attract as many as 4,000 keen walkers to the cause.

Barbara Lawson, president of The Kidney Trust, said: "All across the nation thousands of people, including many kidney dialysis patients, walked to raise awareness and to let people know that kidney disease can be prevented."

"The success of this year's KAT Walk will allow the Kidney Trust to expand its testing program and provide much-needed assistance to dialysis patients."

Kidney disease is often caused by diabetes and high blood pressure, making exercise a key area in which people can take the situation into their own hands and protect their health.
