Scouts make Northern Ireland comeback

A resurgence is being experienced by the out-and-about scout movement, according to the BBC.

Northern Ireland is claimed to be at the forefront of the revival in the movement, with more and more youngsters cleaning their hiking boots and signing on for outdoor adventures with the youth group.

Scouting this year celebrated its 100th anniversary, but with many doubting the lasting appeal of the movement, Northern Ireland is reported to have seen a 1,000 member burst in the last four years.

Hiking boots are not all scouts need for the range of activities they can participate in, with watersports shoes also in order for river adventures and camping gear a must.

The appeal of a resurgent scout movement is in fact hailed by some as a means of brightening the lives of those blighted by instability and violence, with a number of children in Iraq reportedly taking part in activities organised by the movement.
