Old shoe-dealer to bring new life

Leading footwear brands Teva and Birkenstock are behind a shopping renaissance in small US towns.

The town of Newburyport, Massachussets, is the latest to look to leading retailers to reinvigorate the town, with the shoe trade one of the leading buyers of empty store space.

JL Coombs is one of the stores to open in Newburyport, boasting the claim of being America's oldest shoe company, founded all the way back in 1830.

Now based in Freeport, Maine, and opening up in Newburyport, the company has modernised well, stocking the latest shoes from fashionable brands Teva, Birkenstock, Reef and many others.

The large store will look to bring shoppers back to the streets of Newburyport, which has become an urgent task – the Newburyport Daily News reported locals saying they could not find a good pizza in town.

Shoe-hunters, however, need look no further than Fitness Footwear for a range of great durable shoes, all to be found at a reasonable price.
