A top model of shoe from New Balance, the 902, has been given a stellar review by an outdoor product specialist.
Outside magazine's 2007 Gear of the Year Buyer's Guide hailed the virtues of the 902 after subjecting it to the gruelling tests it imposed on its chosen shoes.
Positive feeling about the shoe was expressed after it was involved in the 3,800-mile pavement, concrete, and smooth dirt path testing of Outside magazine's favourite specimens in Colorado.
The magazine said the shoe's lightness was a bonus: "A handful of shoes boast construction this light, but most are minimalist racing flats without much structure.
Not so with the 902. Thanks to new-tech, lightweight materials in the cushioning, foam and even the breathable mesh of the upper the 902 supports your foot better than many midweight shoes."
A user told Outside that the forgiving nature and adaptability of the shoe were further bonuses: "You can slam the downhills with abandon but it won't bog you down on the flats."
