The FitFlop is the flip-flop with the gym built in, and offers a fashionable footwear choice which will help strengthen your muscles, tighten up the leg muscles and tone your bum without ever having to set foot in the gym.
The revolutionary shoes were the brainchild of Marcia Kilgore, the Bliss Spa founder who had the idea that women should be able to get a lot more toning value out of walking and get a gym style workout without the time commitment.
With the technical expertise of biomechanics expert Dr. David Cook the concept was turned into reality and the patented Microwobbleboard™ was created. Located in the midsole of all FitFlop creations, it adds an extra wobble to the step and activates the muscles for longer, improving body tone without any extra time or effort required.
Designed to be worn on all occasions, from the moment you get up to the second you hit the sack, your legs and bum can get a prolonged workout, your feet given exceptional comfort, and your posture improved. With the Fitflop you’ll start to feel fitter and healthier and look fantastic in next to no time.
FitFlop sandals have been biomechanically engineered to add more value to walking, and have been subjected to rigorous testing by experts in anatomy and movement dynamics. The FitFlop features the Microwobbleboard™ in the midsole of the shoes which increases the length of time the muscles in the legs and bottom are activated during a normal step which helps to improve toning with each step you take. What’s more, the sandals have been designed to improve your posture and reduce the stresses on your lower back and joints. When you walk with FitFlop, tired and aching feet become re-energized, and you can really feel the benefits after even a short walk. FitFlop sandals have also been reported to help sufferers of bone and muscle conditions get pain relief.
First of all it is necessary to check that you have a correct fit. Take 20-30 steps at a brisk walking pace and look at how your feet are positioned. If your heel has slipped off the back of the footbed it means that the straps are too tight and you will need to go up a size.
When you first start to use FitFlop footwear, it will take your body a while to adjust to the healthier and more active walking gait. It is recommended to start off slowly, and only wear your new shoes for a short period at first and build up to a full workout gradually. This will ensure that your muscles adapt to the increased activation and will not leave you feeling too sore afterwards.
The upper straps in FitFlop sandals are designed not to stretch and FitFlop footwear is best worn without socks, even the sheepskin boots. The sheepskin boots and the Gogh II model have been treated with AgIon™ technology to help eliminate foot odour. If you have any questions on FitFlop footwear, check the product tag and read our Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section.
The Microwobbleboard™ in the FitFlop midsole was developed by Dr. David Cook and Darren James at London South Bank University (LSBU) in 2006. The FitFlop Microwobbleboard™ causes a loading of the muscle in the leg and bottom which slows down the transition between heel and toe, causing the muscles in the leg and bottom to be activated for longer. The increased activation is responsible for faster toning and more efficient exercising.
FitFlop footwear is the product of extensive biomechanical research and testing and has been engineered to increase toning and tightening of the muscles in the legs and bottom. Studies conducted at the Centre for Human Performance at LSBU* have clearly demonstrated that a change to FitFlop sandals can offer the following benefits compared with standard shoes.
The huge success of the FitFlop is due to its great style which can be easily matched with any outfit and its ability to turn even the most mundane of daily activities into a workout session. Finding time to get to the gym is proving harder than ever with the time pressures of modern life. The FitFlop solves the problem by adding a workout to every daily activity, whether cooking your dinner, doing the school run, shopping or even going for a walk!
The FitFlop not only tones the legs and bottom, but it also helps to improve the posture and returns the body to a much healthier walking style, similar to that of barefoot walking. The innovative design helps to ease pressures on the joints and lower back and spreads the pressures exerted on the foot.
Many customers have reported that walking in the shoes re-invigorates the feet and limbs, helps to reduce swelling, cancels out lower back and joint pain and even helps relieve the pain from arthritis, plantar foot pain, degenerative disc disease and sciatica as well as many more common complaints.
Since the release of the FitFlop the company have been inundated with letters of thanks from sufferers of many musculoskeletal conditions for the pain relief which the shoes provide which helps them get back to a healthier, more active lifestyle. Conditions such as osteoarthritis, heel spurs, restless leg syndrome, chronic lower back pain, plantar fasciitis, sciatica and degenerative disc disease have all been reported to be eased when wearing FitFlop footwear. Read our FitFlop testimonials for further information on how beneficial customers have found the shoes.
The FitFlop has been extensively tested and subjected to biomechanical case studies by Dr David Cook, Senior Lecturer in Biomechanics and Darren James at The Centre for Human Performance at London South Bank University (LSBU). The studies were conducted over a 36 month period and have demonstrated that the FitFlop can increase muscle activity in the calf muscles by up to 11%, the hamstrings by up to 16% and the bottom by up to 30%. One wearer even achieved a 53% increase in gluteus muscle activation.
The FitFlop also helps to reduce the stress placed on the lower back by enforcing a change in the posture of the body and reducing the stress placed on the joints of the knees and ankles. The design of the shoes reduces foot pressure concentration to help re-invigorate and breathe new life into tired feet. All of these benefits are possible to achieve just by changing footwear and walking normally.
*Biomechanical studies on the performance and efficacy were conducted by Dr. David Cook and Darren James at the Centre for Human Performance at London South Bank University (LSBU) and Salford University. Tests were conducted on the original FitFlop Walkstar sandal between December 2006 and March 2007.
The FitFlop features a triple density midsole termed the Microwobbleboard™. A high density heel section provides excellent cushioning to take the sting out of the heel strike and start a smooth rolling of the foot from heel to toe. In the middle of the shoe, a low density section creates an instability requiring the body to make corrections to maintain the balance. As the foot rolls onto the toes, the midsole changes to medium density EVA foam to create a firm push off to help keep the walking speed brisk.
The movement from heel to toe is slowed down causing the muscles of the leg and bottom to be activated for longer, increasing the toning value of walking. The smooth transition from heel to toe also helps speed up the walking pace to help increase fat and calorie burning and speeds up the breakdown of cellulite.
The technology was developed and tested by Dr David Cook and Darren James at London Southbank University and the results shoe up to 30% more muscle activation can be generated by the shoes. Continued testing and high profile endorsements from celebrities, scientists and the press have demonstrated that the shoes really do build the gym into every step.
Based on customer feedback, FitFlop sandals when used on a regular basis can also offer a variety of additional benefits from alleviating joint pains to providing orthopaedic relief.

FitFlop sandals and boots are only manufactured in whole sizes. If you are a half size you should choose the bigger size if you have high insteps or wide feet. Opt for the smaller size if your insteps are low or your feet are narrow. From sizing research FitFlop have found that European women tend to have a slightly higher instep than American women. Most Americans choose to go down a size, whereas the rest of the world usually opts for a larger size shoe.
FitFlop sandals and boots are designed to fit a standard UK foot width with the usual grading. The size is a function of instep height and arch height. The length of the shoes should not be a problem whether you go up or down a half size.
The foot is held high up across the instep, and the material used in construction will not stretch even with prolonged use. The sandals therefore improve your posture and boost toning for the entire life of the shoes.
The straps in FitFlop sandals are not flexible, and are not designed to stretch when you walk. This keeps them firmly on the feet ensuring you get the maximum benefit from the Microwobbleboard™ in the soles. FitFlop boots however are designed to keep the forefoot and the toes snugly against the upper, whilst the heel is given the freedom to move. Your heel will feel loose in the boots however this freedom of movement is an integral part of the FitFlop boot design. The FREEFOOT fit has been biomechanically engineered to give the maximum benefit from walking in the boots.
Wet the midsole of the sandals with a little water and scrub gently in a circular motion with a soft-bristled scrubbing brush, or an old toothbrush is a good option. For more stubborn stains washing powder can be used, provided it does not contain bleach.
The FitFlop is not designed to be submerged in water or to be washed in the washing machine, and they are not tumble-dryer friendly. Patent leather models can be wiped with a damp cloth or cleaned with specialist patent leather spray cleaner.
For soft or napa leather straps, only use specialist leather cleaner, and for suede and nubuck a specialist suede/nubuck cleaning product. Check the instructions as methods and cleaning instructions can vary between brands. It is wise to try out any new cleaning product on a small inconspicuous area of the strap in the first instance.
The suede straps of the FitFlop Oasis sandal require cleaning with suede cleaner. As with all suede shoes, it is advisable to try not to get them wet as this can damage suede and can leave water marks with can difficult to remove. The midsole of the Oasis sandal can be cleaned as with the other FitFlop sandal models.
NEVER PUT FITFLOP SANDALS IN A WASHING MACHINE OR TUMBLE-DRYER
FitFlop boots have been designed to be worn without socks and to help keep them fresh and healthy they have been treated with AgIon™ anti-bacterial technology. Sheepskin is a naturally thermostatic material which helps to keep the temperature inside the boot constant. When the external temperature increases the boots stay cool, and sheepskin has excellent insulation properties for when it gets colder. The wool is naturally dense and soft on the feet and will wick away moisture and allow air to circulate in the boots.
Whilst the boots are not waterproof, the exterior has been treated with a water-resistant coating to resist water splashes and protect the boots if you are caught in a shower. If the boots do get wet you should keep them in a dry place and allow them to dry out naturally for at least 24 hours. Do not put the boots in direct sunlight to dry and never put them in a tumble dryer. If the boots get dirty, wait until they are totally dry and then use a very soft suede brush to remove the dirt and only brush in one direction. If the boots get very dirty a specialist sheepskin cleaner can be used. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to avoid accidental damage.
If your Gogh or Gogh II clogs get damp they should be left to dry out in an airy place out of direct sunlight to prevent bleaching of the fabric. To speed up the process and maintain their shape, paper towels can be stuffed inside whilst they are allowed to dry. These models can be worn with socks, and woollen socks are ideal to help keep the feet cool and dry. The outside of the boots should be cleaned with a soft brush to remove dirt and keep them looking as good as the day you bought them.
Snugger snow boots can easily be cleaned with a soft damp cloth and then allowed to dry naturally in an airy environment. Avoid drying the boots in direct sunlight. The insoles of the boots are treated with AgIon™ technology to keep them healthy, fresh and odour free
Q. Is it safe to wear my FitFlop shoes and boots when pregnant?
A. FitFlop always recommend consulting a doctor if you are suffering from a medical condition or are pregnant, and to wear them in rotation with standard shoes. The engineer responsible for the creation of the muscle loading Microwobbleboard™ recommended that the shoes should not be worn whilst pregnant. However some women have continued with their FitFlop footwear and have found that they can still be worn comfortably and have even been reported to have additional benefits. Some pregnant women have claimed that they help with swollen legs, relieve pain from varicose veins and even help with Symphisis Pubic Dysfunction. FitFlop always recommend consulting your gynaecologist or obstetrician before wearing the shoes to get their seal of approval.
Q. I wear an orthotic insert in my shoes, can I just wear FitFlop sandals instead?
A. Whilst the FitFlop offers support for the feet and helps to return the body to a more natural way of walking, they have been designed for a standard foot shape. The additional loading of the muscles and the changes made to the walking gait brought about by the triple density midsole will not benefit everyone. It is best to exercise caution if you suffer from foot conditions which require the use of an orthotic sole, and always consult your podiatrist or chiropodist before wearing the shoes.
Q. Can I wear my FitFlop sandals for jogging, running and cycling or are they only designed for walking?
A. FitFlop footwear gives you a workout while you walk, and have not been designed to be used for any other activity. Since the sandals do not offer many of the features of a training shoe, they are not suitable for running or jogging. Training shoes feature a heel counter and more protection for the toes. FitFlop sandals are likely to fall of the feet, or result in injury to the toes if used for running. If you want to get even greater benefits from wearing your FitFlop footwear, increase the time you spend exercising in them, or buy a couple of pairs so they will go with daytime and evening wear.
Q. I suffer from obesity, but would like to get a pair of FitFlop sandals. Is it safe to wear them?
A. The FitFlop has a generous fit and is suitable for those with wide feet. The footbed is wider than most shoes and they can be worn comfortably by those who are overweight. However, the muscle loading and posture enhancing benefits of the shoes have only been tested on individuals of a standard weight. FitFlop cannot guarantee the same effects from their footwear with people who are either overweight or underweight. However the good news is that many customers have reported that wearing FitFlop sandals has helped them to become more mobile, and have relieved the strain placed on the lower back, knees and ankle joints. By standing up straighter in the shoes, the weight is distributed more evenly. If you are overweight it is recommended that you choose the Walkstar model originally, as it features stronger straps and offers the most generous fit. FitFlop have had reports that wearing the shoes has enabled larger women to reduce weight, as wearing them has made walking more pleasurable and comfortable.
Q. Will FitFlop sandals aggravate my bunions?
A. Quite the opposite in fact. Bunions are often caused by shoes with a narrow or restrictive toe box, which do not allow the metatarsal bones to align naturally. Wearing the FitFlop should actually help to relieve the symptoms of bunions and it is quite likely that once you walk in them you will want to wear nothing else.
Q. I have wide feet, are Fitflop sandals going to fit me?
A. The FitFlop is excellent for those with wide feet. The sandals are wider than an average shoe, so usually fit very well with all widths of foot. People with high insteps may need to spend a few days wearing in the shoes. The midsole is designed to naturally adopt the shape of the instep as it compresses, and will mould well to the underside of the foot. If your instep is particularly high, then it is recommended that you go up a size.
Q. I have wide feet, are FitFlop sandals going to fit me?
A. If you have narrow feet you may be more comfortable by going down a size. Be sure to check our sizing guidelines before buying. The Pietra model is designed with the narrow footed in mind, and features a slimmed down version of the Microwobbleboard™ ideal for those with narrow feet
Q. FitFlop only have whole sizes, should I go up a half size of down a half size?
A. The design of FitFlop is based on an average UK foot width. European women tend to have slightly higher arches than American women, so as a general rule of thumb, if you are from Europe go up a half size and if you are from America go down a half size. However be sure to check our sizing guidelines before purchasing your FitFlop sandals and boots to ensure you get a perfect fit.

"I bought my Walkstars and took them out for a test and could really feel the difference after just a short walk. My legs felt like they had had a good workout, but I actually felt like I had more energy. That was last year, and I wear them whenever I can as they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. Since then I have bought the black Walkstar 3 model so I can wear them in the office. I have recommended them to all of my friends and they are now wearing them too. I should get a discount for selling so many!"
Ms. M. Singer
"I have had mine for over a year now and can’t recommend them highly enough. I originally got a pair as I had been getting pain in my heel which was severe in the mornings and made it really difficult for me to walk. I wore them every day for a month, and whilst my heel was still painful for the first week the pain gradually went and I was pain free – it was such a relief. My pair don’t look that stylish but I really don’t care!"
Malcolm Stevens, Leeds
"As a sufferer of arthritis, I have pain in my knees and ankles when I walk, and FitFlops have really helped to ease the pain from walking. They also have relieved little niggles in my lower back. They fit snugly on my feet, as I was concerned that I would get that silly flip-flopping noise when I walked, but I was pleasantly surprised. They are really comfortable and supportive. A great fit without the Flop."
Sally Harrison, Margate
"I’m so chuffed with my Electras, they look sparkly and are really really comfy. They are really supportive and I can walk for miles in them without feeling tired. Victoria Roberts, Bristol
