Fashionable German Birkenstock shoes are not four words you often hear together, along with “That was a great joke, Klaus”, and “those swimming trunks look fantastic on you, Hans”. This year however, you are likely to hear one of those. But before you go out and buy your loved one a pair of Speedos, I am of course referring to the rise in popularity of Birkenstock sandals to become the must have fashionable summer footwear for 2010.
Whilst socks with sandals, super tight men’s swimming wear and pickled cabbage have yet to cross the cultural divide and become a hit in dear ole’ Blighty, Germany’s sandals are certainly something which should be accepted as one of our own.
However, buying a pair of Birkenstocks does not mean you have to start wearing lederhosen or woollen socks with your sandals. If you are worried that a pair of Birkenstocks will put you on that slippery slope which will lead to a dodgy sense of fashion, a love of skin tight swimwear, or an unnatural fondness for sausages, you need not worry. Some technical tweaks by the designers have removed all of these tendencies from their sandals for the British market.
What you are left with is a guarantee of comfort, excellent support for the feet, moisture wicking suede footbeds, and sandals which you could give to your children as an heirloom, such is their longevity.
If you are after quality footwear, pure comfort for the summer and style which will at times edge into the height of fashion, but are guaranteed never go out of style, then Birkenstock shoes are for you.
